We humans have a natural blind spot in the way we experience ourselves and the world. Every one of us is born with it. It’s built into the structure of our brains, and it shapes our lives in powerful ways.
The blind spot is the hidden cause of nearly all human misery. Its impact is so enormous that it’s the central problem in each of our lives. It’s also the central problem of our species.
The blind spot hides within us beneath our level of awareness as an invisible gaping chasm. Throughout human history, few people have identified it within themselves. The vast majority of us don’t recognize or understand the blind spot within ourselves. Some of us are fortunate enough to learn how to compensate for the blind spot in a way that keeps the harm to a minimum. The majority of us aren’t so fortunate.
As far as I know, the blind spot has never been named. We need a name for it, so let’s call it the central psychological blind spot.
